RV solar panels are a great idea for RV owners. These solar panels are made specifically for recreational vehicles and mount to the roof of the vehicle. These are commonly seen now and many RV owners are familiar with them.

The solar collectors that mount to an RV operate on the same principle as do residential solar panels, but on a smaller scale simply because RVs are smaller than houses. Those who camp out in their trailers often enjoy the ability to generate their own power. They feel less tethered to campsites. Not having to pay connection fees at campgrounds is liberating for those who want to venture off the beaten path.

As you investigate RV solar panels, there are a few things you should take into consideration. Take care to evaluate the following in order to make a more informed decision regarding solar collectors for your travel trailer, fifth wheel trailer or motor home.

  • Determine the average power usage for your RV. Find out how much power each of your appliances, lights and other things that use electricity. Tally up the total at you can determine how many watts you will require.
  • Decide if you want to go completely off-grid. If so, you will need to rely on solar energy and battery stores. If you choose to use energy from the sun to supplement your electricity usage, then you will still be reliant on some energy provided through campgrounds or elsewhere.
  • Consider the length of time that you want to be in the wilderness camping in your RV. In locations with lots of sunlight, you will be able to recharge your solar cells daily. Your inverter will convert the direct current into usable alternating current.
  •

Campers that use recreational vehicles are often in search of an outdoor experience accompanied with most of the comforts from home, hence the use of RVs instead of tents. These comforts include many appliances and conveniences. Some these comforts include the following.

  • Water pump to give access to instant water from either storage tanks or water hook-ups.
  • Cooking appliances such as stove, microwave and ovens.
  • Lights to illuminate the RV.
  • Water heaters heat water for washing dishes and bathing.
  • Heaters with which to warm the RV in cool weather. Fans and sometimes air conditioners for cooling during hot weather conditions
  • Refrigerators and freezers to keep food cold.
  • Dishwashers and washing machines are available in high-end recreational vehicles.
  • Small appliances such as toasters, toaster ovens, slow cookers, coffee makers and even hair dryers use electricity.
  • Television and audiovisual equipment for entertainment.
  •

Appliances and conveniences utilize energy in an RV. Items that need to be plugged in will rely on an energy source. Camping in an RV off the grid is impossible, or at least very uncomfortable without an alternative energy source. Many people have utilized generators for years, but RV solar panels are a great alternative renewable energy source. Generators use fuel to operate, while solar energy is a renewable, clean energy with which to power your recreational vehicle.
