Portable solar panels are an emerging subgenre of the solar panel industry. They are useful for many mobile applications. Some are safety oriented, such as panels designed to put a trickle charge on a car battery. Others are more convenience oriented, such as panels designed to charge mobile electronic devices such as phones or mp3 players.

So what makes portable solar panels different from their stationary cousins? One big difference is that many portable panels are flexible, meaning they can be rolled and stored in a trunk. It would be highly impractical to take a three by eight foot panel and carry it in your car against the chance that your battery dies! Thankfully, that isn’t necessary.

The yield per square foot of portable solar panels is less than that of a comparably sized traditional panel. This is offset by the fact that you cannot take a traditional panel backpacking, or put it in a compact car. The versatility of a portable panel helps make up for its lack of head to head competitiveness.
