Flexible solar panels are an interesting way that the solar market has tried branching out. They are the first generation of panel designed specifically for mobile, rugged applications such as backpacking or hiking in general. They are an attempt to meld environmentally friendly power with the lifestyle of an environmentally enthusiastic person.

Flexible solar panels are utilizing some of the newer technologies involved in the silicon manufacturing sector to produce panels that are thinner and less rigid than their predecessors. The technology has not advanced to the point where the new style of panels are directly competitive in terms of generation capacity, and so the panels are being seen as a way to expand the way in which consumers use solar panels, rather than simply competing with the established panel types.

In time, the technology backing flexible solar panels may be used for even more wide-ranging applications, such as solar paints. These paints would create a current from being exposed to sunlight, and could be used to turn everything from buildings to cars into a small electric generating system. While still years from being a reality, the possibility is an exciting one.
